In a research conducted in Beijing, the most common causes of liver cirrhosis (肝硬化) are related to people suffering from chronic hepatitis B (慢性乙型肝炎). In the early stages of cirrhosis, the use of cordyceps sinensis (冬蟲夏草) and traditional Chinese medicine often helps to slow the progression of cirrhosis and in some cases reverse its effects.
A research conducted in the Research Department of Veterans General Hospital in Tapei also discovered that an active component in cordyceps sinensis can restrain the progression of immunoglobulin nephritis (免疫球蛋白腎炎). While there currently lacks an effective treatment for immunoglobulin nephritis, it was shown that cordyceps sinensis can stop the situation from worsening.

There are numerous ganoderma (also called lingzhi, reishi, 靈芝) products on the market that advertises itself as 100% cracked spores. It is a common believe that when ganoderma spores are cracked, which means the hard walls protecting the spores are broken down, the human body can therefore better absorb the nutrients from the spores.
The Institute of Chinese Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong did a study on how efficient can ganoderma cracked spores can improve our immunity compared to ganoderma without cracked spores. The researchers ran tests on mice and found that their immunomodulatory function is similar, for either cracked or non-cracked spores.
